Global HPV epidemiology update:
F. Xavier Bosch conducts epidemiological research on cancers linked to infectious agents notably on cancer of the liver, of the cervix, of the skin, of the vagina, of the anus, of the penis and of the oral cavity. He has also carried on research studies on diet and colorectal cancer and lead a program of implementation and methodological research in cancer registration. These various research projects have been instrumental in demonstrating the causal role of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in cervical cancer and on the opportunities for liver cancer prevention using Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) vaccines in rural Africa. Some of these studies have played a catalytic role for the initiation of the first vaccine trials for HBV and HPV and for the evaluation of HPV tests as screening tools. Dr. F. Xavier Bosch has worked in what is now called molecular
epidemiology. His research work has been characterized by the integration of the latest biological assays to determine exposure to carcinogens with epidemiological field studies carried out in about 35 countries around the world, particularly in Spain, Latin America, Africa and Asia. The final goal of his research has been the application of the aetiological knowledge derived from it, to the primary prevention of cancer.

HPV Screening- New data & new algorithms

Dr. Attila T. Lorincz is a molecular biologist recognized for his research in human diagnostics and the natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. Currently he is Professor of Molecular Epidemiology at the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, Barts and The London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London, England.Prof. Lorincz received a PhD in genetics from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland in 1980. He conducted post-doctoral research in the molecular biology of the cell cycle at the University of California, San Diego and Santa Barbara from which a key discovery was the cloning and characterization of cdc28, the first cdk gene (Lorincz AT and Reed SI 1984. Nature 307:183). His work on HPV began as a collaboration with the Nobel Laureate Prof. Harald zurHausen and was initiated by an agreement between Georgetown University, Washington DC; DKFZ in Heidelberg Germany; and Bethesda Research Laboratories Inc. (the precursor of Life Technologies Inc.) in 1983. In the years leading up to 1990 he cloned and characterized several clinically important HPV types, provided a clearer understanding of the natural history of HPV infection and pioneered large clinical studies that revealed key evidence of the association of HPV with cervical cancer. In 1990 Dr Lorincz co-founded Digene Corporation (now QIAGEN Corp.) and transfered all the HPV IP and technology from Life Technologies to a new R&D team where he assumed the post of Sr. Vice President R&D until 2006. His work on a non-radioactive assay for HPV culminated in the US FDA approval of the Hybrid Capture (HC) series of HPV tests. These nucleic acid amplification tests are generally recognized as the gold standard in routine HPV screening worldwide, with 10+ million tests conducted annually. More than 40 U.S. and international patents concerning novel HPV types and novel assay systems have been awarded for Prof. Lorincz's work. He has authored 210 original peer-reviewed research papers and books on diverse topics in epidemiology and the basic molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis. He was primary author of a paper chosen by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology as a "classic," the first to show key quantitative differences in the relative risks of HPV types that led to the low, medium, and high risk classification system of HPV cancer risk. The paper is the most frequently cited article to appear in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology to date.Prof. Lorincz was the recipient of the 1994 AVDA achievement award from the American Venereal Disease Association for outstanding contributions to the field of STD research. In 2000 he received the High Technology Council Prize from the State of Maryland for the development of the HC2 HPV test. His current research interests focus on the interplay between genetics and epigenetics in the development and evolution of prostate, breast, and cervical cancers.
